As Substack continues to grow in our efforts to build a better future for the media ecosystem by putting writers and readers in charge, we have been rapidly expanding our team. Today, we’re pleased to announce that we’ve made an important communications hire to help tell the story not only of Substack the company, but also of the writers who are building the future of media on the platform.
More than half a million people pay to subscribe to a Substack writer, and the top ten publications now collectively make more than US$20 million a year in subscription revenue. At the same time, we have been creating an infrastructure and network of services to support the tens of thousands of other writers who are just getting started. This work is important in helping independent writers, but it’s also a business imperative for our company: we succeed only if writers succeed. These writers and their success are the story of Substack.
To help tell the stories of these writers and provide them with a robust platform for important conversations, we have recruited Lulu Cheng Meservey to be Substack’s vice president of communications. Lulu (pictured above) was the co-founder and president of TrailRunner International, a global strategic communications firm that specializes in technology, financial, and corporate communications.
Lulu brings a wealth of experience across a broad range of disciplines, combining intellectual agility with a clear strategic mind, which we think are ideal traits in helping writers and a young company like Substack.
We couldn’t be prouder to have Lulu joining Substack’s leadership team. She’s an avid reader and writer who cares deeply about building a counterbalance to the attention economy. As well as expertise in communications, she also has a background in policy, finance, and technology, for MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory Cyber Policy Working Group, J.P. Morgan, and McLarty Associates, among others.
Lulu’s hire comes at the beginning of a new phase of rapid growth for Substack and we are actively looking to fill numerous roles in software development, product management, data, services, and more.
