Today, we’re introducing a new feature that will make it simple to publish and view videos on Substack.
With this feature, you can upload or record videos directly into a Substack post. You can then make videos available to everyone or only paid subscribers. The videos will be playable directly on the web in your Substack post, and they will appear in the email versions as clickable images.
As with everything on Substack, you own all of the content and it’s connected to a mailing list that you fully own and control.
Below are some examples of how writers are using the new video feature:

Thank you so much for all this work you are doing and the wonderful opportunities for all of us.
You as well, Natalia. Have a beautiful day.
Amazing! This platform is really leveling up. I’m glad to see this new development.
🖼Nicely said, Chevanne. I agree and believe that Substack is going to get betterand better to level up in quality and thus more artistic and creative writer will want to be part of Substack. ❤️
This makes me excited to create paid content. There are so many options!
Such opportunities, is what's going to bring in more talent and of course earnings from subscribers.
So so true. Let’s hope for the good future, George Ngigi.
Thank you for the share.
Well, just like you said, there are many options, but never like Substack. Thank you Chevanne.
Excellent. Thank you for working to get this up and running.
I agree Colleen. Thank you for posting.
OMG! This is what i've been waiting for. Can i just double check. Will it be MP4 or YT
Hi DCODED! You will be able to upload an MP4. What do you mean by YT (YouTube?)
Sorry. Yes. YouTube :)
Thank you Kevin for sharing your response and reply.
Thanks. Will using YouTube still be an option?
Yes! This just expands your video options, but you can continue to embed them from other sites.
Thanks, Bailey!
Good morning, Bailey. Thank you for your immediate response to most of our concerns. It’s nice to have someone with can rely on …HRH
🖼Good for you Annette and all of those who have YouTube. My only ever platform is with Bankless-Substack and LinkedIn platform. ❤️
Wonderful expansion.
New features. New things to learn. Thank you, Substack. ❤️
Hi there,
I don't know if this is the right place to give feedback but here we go...
First, amazing feature! It can make the experience much richier and been managed directly by substack instead of embeds from third-party videos enable you folks to keep the things smooth and performatic for writers and readers.
What I feel is missing for my goal is the possibity to include multiple videos per post. I write tutorials about developing web apps. My idea is to break the various steps into several small videos spread on the post.
Thanks and congrats,
JM
I second this question. People love short, to the point, video. The video editing tools make it so simple to cut up a video into digestible lengths. It would be awesome to scatter them through a written post.
is it possible to embed a video in the middle of a post, instead of having it at the top of the post?
(like we can do with images)
or do we have to upload a video on YouTube, and then insert it in the middle of the post as a link?
Thank you in advance
Greg
Good question. I want to know, too!!
Great, I've been waiting for this to include a short trailer of my reflection videos. What's the recommended display size? Will it take 1280 x 720? What are file size limitations?
20GB is the maximum for file size right now! And we support variable aspect ratios now. No "ideal" just yet.
My video, imported from an iphone, has black bars around it when I put it on my substack page. how to fix this?
😀Just yet, but it’s coming up soon, right Bailey?
Len. As Bailey said few minutes ago: “the limitation for now is 20GB.
Thanks for asking.
🖼Jairaj thanks for sharing a valuable information.
I noticed that my device only support 20 GB in high resolution on photos for example, but if I choose to send 25 GB it will take it, but without HD. ❤️
Very nice
Absolutely, Lincoln. Thank you.
Pivot. PIVOT. **PIVOT.**
Thanks for posting Edward.
You're really going in on this. Which is great. One thing that I would love in the future is that comics have the option to be printed. I'm not a fan of some of the print on demand services that are out there.
Love love your post and clarity, Andrew Heard,
..but may I ask why you are not fan of some of the print on demand? 😯
Well, I like print on demand generally, but I am not a fan of places like Amazon and other print on demand services that help you get your stuff on Amazon. The requirements are always changing and causing problems for me. Plus it costs more than I have the money to pay for it. So something that reduces the cost or even eliminates it on the back end would help. I've been very financially strapped since before the pandemic. Substack is helping me by being less cost heavy upfront. I didn't join specifically because of comics but now that you have added it, I would love the full suite of services that a print on demand offers.
👍That makes perfect sense. Precise-well articulated explanation. Thanks again, Andrew Heard.
Just for additional context, most print on demand services require you to meet certain dimension and file requirements. Not everyone has the skills to do that, although I do. But then you have to print a copy of it and pay for the printing and delivery, which is having increasing costs in and of themselves. If there are any problems with the print, you have to order new copies at the same cost. And at any time, the dimensions and file requirements as well as the accepted printable options can change. So you go into a project with sunk costs. If Substack could provide a way to eliminate some of these, you'd be able to attract more people to the platform. Perhaps a similar option like the "send test email" function you have.
Hey, guys! The best news to my tuesday. Take a look on my proposal at the form you send to us!
Mauroamaral, thank you.
Do you mean to say: read rec. and play?
That sounds like a great idea.
Hey, Rosie, tks for your comment.
Not really. I'm just talk about the video feature. :)
But, yeah, [Read][Read][Play] is quite my life since 2003.
Hi, Mauro. Nice.
Look forward to having access to this great new feature. Thanks.
Lot of excitement here, grateful to substack and all the supporters. Thank you, The Blues Circle for posting.
sounds great!
Thank you Jonathan for posting.
We have load of great videos showcasing Benin history and culture. So happy to have this feature!
Can Substack videos (and audio even) be placed anywhere in a post, or are they going to remain at the top?
Does it support captioning?
Thank you for adding the feature and the invitation for beta testing. My post served as the CC for the video. Is there a CC option so viewers can opt in or out? Thank you!!
I'm glad you're settling for nothing less in making Substack publishing favourable for everyone in the room. Kudos!
Sounds intriguing. I'll consider it.
Thank you look forward to this feature. Could I recommend a way to connect Facebook account as Twitter so we can send our Substack post directly there w/o having to login and post links?
Yes, Clarity. I believe you can, if I am correct.❤️
Very nice! Thank you, Substack.
🖼Thank you, Lloyd.
Thank you, Substack.
Thank you, Bailey.
Thank you, everyone.❤️
Yay! this is great, something we've been waiting and wishing for!
Yes, I agree. Thank you, Giulia.
(groan) I need to read more and watch less.
Well said, Miss Rodeo when you say: “Need to read more and watch less”. Don’t limit yourself of God’s good giving abilities.
How about combining the reading and watching?
Not sure if this comment section is still alive, but what’s the max length on a video?
Fantastic. I've started working on videos using some help from ElevenLabs and Headliner. I mean, you have to pay to play, but it's pretty amazing to sort of see it all come to life. Now, I've just got to wait a little longer for some real AI video help to make it all shine. Video on Substack? Yeah, I'm in.
Thank you, I just tried it! Can we also include a background or not?
Is this feature still alive? Can´t find it hehe
hi, is this scrapped now/
Is this still in beta? or is there a button I'm not seeing. Thank you :)
how big a file can i upload?
We've had eu.vc on the waitlist for aaaaages now and never heard had any updates on the progress, wait times to expect, official launch, etc. It'd be an absolute game changer for us to be able to embed videos directly to our posts, so I'd be sooooooooo eternally thankful to get access to this feature 😍
Hi - does anyone know if I can post a podcast as a video and have this push to podcasting platforms? Currently only looks like you can do audio?
Date: Jan 25, it is now 11/14/2022.
Question: When will Video be brought out of Beta?
Wonderful... smooth, easy and brilliant. Now to refinements. Is there any way we can move the positioning of the video in line to a position in our post... as one can with an image today.
Thanks and great work.
So creative. TY.
When is Video coming out of Beta? This is going on for almost a full year now. Would be good if Copy & Paste Embed Video Code was adopted.
Looking forward to giving this a spin. Thank you!
On board, thanks for this.
I would like to know; when is Video going to come out of Beta for We Version Users (especially Linux-Firefox Browser Users)?
I'd love to be able to upload videos to my Substack account and then embed them in my posts. Either that or please make it possible to play Rumble videos directly in the post, like you can with YouTube.
Wonderful development, my compliments from Rome, will start using it soon. God bless you.
this needs to come faster
I just tried the new beta feature, and I absolutely love it! I think it's a great way to bring life to the article of choice. I always include pictures, but this has allowed me to also add my own touch of humor and personalize my publication a lot better. Thanks for adding me to the beta test, and great job on the video feature. There is no lag, Upload time is SO MUCH FASTER than YouTube, and the picture quality is first rate! 👌 *excellent* If anyone wants to see the video, I'll link to it here. Cheers 🍻 Have a beautiful day!

Love this new feature and am so glad to have discovered Substack. You guys are on the cutting edge for all of us who care about substantive essays and more! Thank you!
Maybe I’m just silly, but how do people upload phone video directly to substack since you can’t upload or edit posts in the app?
I was gonna do an exclusive behind the scenes mini vlog but just uploaded it to tiktok.
Since we can embed to TikTok I may just do that, or if I make a sit down chat video I’ll do it with my computer camera (I don’t have a proper filming camera).
Still fiddling with it! Finding its best use and tech setup for myself!
Is possible to embed more than one video by post? I would like to spread multiple steps of a tutorial in the body of the post with one short video video for each step.
thank you for providing this tool. Gonna try it asap with a video
Really looking forward to using this. Just been given access! Does anyone know, how long your videos can be and is there an optimal size, so they look nice when imbedded in the newsletter?
Relaunching my tech newsletter on the 18th May.

Thanks for onboarding. Will reach out to Horsthel Mood to make use of the new video feature.
Seriously love everything you're doing! Looking forward to this. <3
Hello, filled out the form a while ago and waiting to hear. Would love to use for my next post. Any chance?
I was notified that it was enabled for my site but no upload button showing - please check for me... https://hosporeset.substack.com
69th commenter, let's go. but really, thank you all for providing this service. tingz like this is what will keep me here creating content.
How do I pick my camera? It seems to default to the low quality in computer camera...
Here is my testimonial, as promised, for beta testing your video. In two words, "It's Great!" I found it simple to use. The uploading of the video was quick and recording a video was quick, too. This will really add to the power of all newsletters, because, as you know, many people prefer videos to reading. Videos also provide more information than text can provide - such as explainer videos. Great work!
Thank you for the invitation! One question, though: it seems that video is a separate entry from our regular newsletter entries. I have a couple of sections, and I was hoping to use video as an introduction to each entry in those sections, like the email header currently functions.
Do you know if that's possible with video? Or does video need to remain a separate section itself?
Just got approved. So excited to experiment with the new feature and leveling up my newsletter content.
This will be a cool feature. Videos on substack will definitely engage the readers even more just like on youtube.
Nice! Please support subtitles or automatic captioning for the deaf.
Fascinating development. Could be a game changer.
Okay! I see you Substack!
And soon @raphaperlin talking about London 👏
Video that's boring to you may be interesting to someone else. The Patti Smith video ("6 minutes of talking and singing") already has about 500 likes and 350 comments.
The vertical video can be expanded to full screen if your phone is in portrait mode.
Videos and writing aren't mutually exclusive. To go back to the Patti Smith example, she does plenty of writing. Why shouldn't she post a (long or short) video too? Both text and videos are forms of communication.
🖼Thank you, Brian for the share. Can’t wait for this feature to launch 🚀…
🖼Can’t wait about this new feature. Thank you, Brian.
