Hetty shares insights on launching paid subscriptions with the To Vegetables, With Love community’s support from Pledges, and how she’s integrated her Substack into her life as a book author and recipe developer.
Hi Substack, I really wish there was a way to pay a small one-time fee to read specific articles. There are many instances where I’d like to read just a single article from a publication, but I don’t want to commit to the subscription model. I really hope that you’ll offer something like this in the future, as it would make readership more accessible to many folks!
If you are going to insist on "paid only" you are going to destroy your company. Obviously I am speaking directly to the Substack.com business. I suppose it is not obvious. All your positive social value will be squandered. I believe this. I just saw it happen on "MEdium." They blew it. They lost me.
Great work! Your storytelling struck a chord. As someone who also goes into these themes in my publication, 'Peaceful Pages', I admire your ability to articulate such profound tips and ideas. Keep the insights coming!
Curious how you choose the writers that you interview for this ... would love to throw my own hat in the ring if possible. I have been a full-time writer for two decades and was burning out and changing my writing model over the past few years (with a paid newsletter on Patreon for a time) when I found Substack a few months ago and have gone all-in. It's an amazing community and although I'm slowly growing from a small base, I'm loving it here.
I have seen a lot of people saying that but I’m too new here to know if that’s my experience. I’ve found lots of great writers to follow including “unknowns” but how much of that is community building and how much Substack promotes I am still learning.
The CLAIM of the Substack management, their company's CLAIM is that they support community. But that is not even normal capitalism. They support themselves, and the writers and readers support THEM selves. This is a better way to see it. And this is quite normal. Any for-profit company HAS to think of its own interest. You can be assured, Substack is not some freak exception.
Thanks for sharing this, Hetty! I am a new writer just getting started, and this was so helpful. It can be overwhelming at first, so your process was super helpful. Plus, I am a big Whole Foods foodie, and loved your vibe!
I now have 5 individuals I follow on Substack - I enjoy their work and indeed value it however when the cost to go paid for these 5 individuals would be close to $500/year, it's just not a feasible option.
I agree, I love the community here but there’s no way I could afford to subscribe to all of the publications that I follow. It’s frustrating. I wish Substack would offer some sort of bundling option, or allow you to pay-per-post. The truth is that I don’t have time (or energy) to read every single thing that everyone puts out, and it would be nice to have the option to just read a single post that peaks my interest rather than committing to a subscription.
I'm new to the platform, so I hope to get to know it a little better to enjoy it

Your page is visually yummy!! Thank you
Interesting insights. It's every creators dilemma deciding if/when they should go paid.

Love this Hetty! So many great ideas popping!
For shame, how did I not know about the wonderful Hetty having a Substack!
Hello my friend!!!
This must be the best job in the world, to think about food, theorize it, apply it, then write about it.
Honestly, it is pretty great. I love it 🥰
need more content!
Truth!

What a cool story! Go Hetty! 🎉
Love this! I hope I can get paid subscribers too so I can create more things.
