A comment about paywalls. I personally dislike partial articles and will delete those who do this. If I am going to part with my money, I like to see the author’s conclusions. I would suggest that if you post 5 days a week, make 2 days free and put 3 behind a paywall. I think you will end up with more subscribers that way.
I immediately unsubscribe if something hits my email & I take the time to read it, only to have a fast "JK pay me now" at the end. I'm not for those kinds of old-school sales tactics.
👴
If something is for the paid audience, only have it emailed to them, not this partial nonsense. It's like getting 3/4 of a recipe: so here I am at the bottom of your email covered in flour with egg on my nose, but I don't get to find out what to do to finish the damn thing?
😆
Just post some things free and some paid, both in their entirety, and FOR THE LOVE OF FSM don't rug pull me by making the post free but then paywalling the ability to comment - I block those people entirely!
I agree with you, Susan, but unfortunately, we have to remind free subscribers to convert, otherwise they never will. So I've reverted to using partial paywalls now, including in videos.
Glad I'm not alone. I have never been comfortable with that approach and haven't done it but still trying to find a good way to let readers know there are paid posts.
Jay Kuo has a voluntary payment system. He gives good value, so after a couple of months I became a paid subscriber.I will be putting my middle grade historical novel up in September (1 chapter per week plus a facts behind the story page for each chapter.) I will follow Jay’s example because I want kids to be able to read and learn even if family finances don’t permit payment.
Thank you for sharing other ways to think about this. It is very helpful. I can't write 5 times a week as my posts are detailed and require a lot of research. I am still figuring out a cadence that is doable but will keep these ideas in mind.
I'm also not in the area for the live thing, and not sure I could attend if I were, but this post was incredibly helpful. I picked up at least 3 tips that made me shift my thinking. The ones about Notes and Paywall are prodigiously worthwhile.
This is awesome! Thank you guys 🙏🏽 as someone that's continuing to build a business here on Substack, I've been very happy with all the resources and the sense of community the platform provides.

- Tons of info from the previous question you asked in this thread - there's volumes of wikis on how to use the Platform (including some really good ones by Substackers)!
I use the app to get into substack. When I click there, I get a horizontal feed to read and a vertical feed to scroll upwards to read. There is no icon/ avatar at the lower left.
Hey Rachel, Do you have that post you could share where you communicated the professional development angle? I would LOVE to share something like that with my followers. I can see how I can make that work. While I am not just specific business development, I do think I could somehow start doing more in that way for personal development. That is a GREAT idea.
None of these tips are worth a penny if you do not know how to operate Substack. It is unbelievable there are no instructions or decoding what it means to "subscribe", "follow", or learn how to perform any number of tasks. Wonderful community with ZERO help on how it works.
What if I decide I don’t want to publish the recorded live stream? I don’t think you always have to publish the recording. Some live streams are just for those who show up for the live event.
I shared this sentiment in terms of concern about what if something is said in a live format that you did not want circulated/published. Might be something racist, embarassing, too personal, etc. I'm also wondering if the "live" presentation might be preceeded by a "dress rehearsal" so there are no embarassing surprises. I don't want to present as a control freak but can't help having this concern. I'm a novice to all of this so sorry if comments are naive.
I'm *assuming* (bear in mind) that you could workaround by:
1. Do the live stream then download it to edit
2. Archive/delete the live stream post that Stax has auto-published
3. Upload the edited version as a new Post
~ NOTE:
I'm pretty sure from a thread I saw about adding Audio Narration after a Post is sent out that you cannot merge the dates, so the "Live" you did would now carry the new Date that you upload the edited version instead, but this could be addressed easily in Post text and/or titles added to vid...
It's more work, but if you're planning to heavily leverage Lives here for your Pub's content strategy, then it's probably worth it. YMMV
🤷♀️
AFAIK there are no options currently to opt out of auto-publish once the live stream has ended.
Totally lost. What is Stax? You can’t download the live stream to edit. Substack provides a recording of it for you in drafts without editing capacity other than you can use clips. Or choose clips.
substack team - you need to stop Reply and Block…. they get to say whatever they want , and I can’t see it, nor can I give a rebuttal…

I live in LA and missed the invite to come attend in person. How do I find out about these ahead of time?
I live in LA too and would have liked to be notified of the event as well.
it would be nice…
Same here! I just posted a note that I'll totally organize a meetup, because I really want to meet other substackers here in LA!
Is there a recording tutorial?
As a reader I think I'd be annoyed if I got all the way to the last paragraph only to run into a paywall. Maybe it depends on the type of content.

DAMN!!! i AM WITH YOU SUSAN. ME: I pretend to write good articles, and you pretend to pay me
Same & that's much better advice!

How about if someone writes just 1 or 2 paragraphs? You're not that invested yet, but you have a taste of the contents.
And this is how all newspapers behind paywalls do it!

Valid concerns. And no way to edit the recorded live stream prior to publishing as far as I can tell.

Stax = Substack
I thought you could download them... but if not, then my workaround won't work. 🤷♀️
Maybe they'll add more access features for Lives in the future?
No you can’t download them. Except possibly after publishing them.
Support payments installation
Thanks for the tips. Very helpful.
It's food idea for fashion people.

Would be great if you did one of these events in NY or south Florida!!
Thank you!! Loved this and I love all three of these writers. ❤️❤️
