I am a disabled Canadian who, despite advanced degrees, lives on a restricted budget. Living w/disability has meant my engagement with employment has been limited & sporadic. I subscribe to many Substacks using free subscriptions—I can’t afford to buy them—but am concerned that the voices/opinions/lived experience of those like me, living somewhat on the margins, are excluded due to paywalls. I wanted to respond to a post by Jen Rubin about the US law against discrimination against federal employees based on DEI categories. Absent from the categories she lists is “ability” (it often gets dropped off these lists despite the “I” representing Inclusion, a deeply held tenet of disability activists world wide). I have no idea how to reach Jen Rubin (or many others) to respond to their postings on Substack. It’s my opinion that those who have Substacks ought to consider enabling those of us of limited means to access comments, either by opening Comments up on a regular basis and/or creating a “pay as you’re able” category. Thanks for your kind attention.
