“Bestsellers get access to new accent color and background tint options.” — Allowing bestsellers to qualify for free enhancements like this will only entrench an “us and them” atmosphere. Please don’t artificially differentiate people’s creative options because of popularity.

But if you plagiarize the right content, you, too, can become an indisputable best seller and stay on the platform in spite of all the people reporting those plagiarists—and from others' labor and care, find aesthetically pleasing rewards 😍🥰

You spoke to the issue that I felt but didn’t articulate to myself. I’d like the enhancement options, too. As a newbie to writing for my Substack again after a long time away, I tried to make my ‘homepage’ good but the options are terribly inadequate, like lack of enough font choices and sizes.

Nah. I wanna read everything. You learn nothing from things you already know and agree with. Seeing and understanding the other side is what the world needs to be able to do.

THIS. Well said. If we don’t engage, learn from and counteract our ideological opponents (no matter who they are or what side everyone’s on) then we give them free rein. Even if one doesn’t actively counteract the opposition, the concept that we wouldn’t want to learn our opponents arguments and how they’re changing is wild to me. Suppression doesn’t work either in one’s personal life or in the political sphere.

Expand full comment
Ray Shell's avatar

It's the EMOTION. If we could read, learn and listen without emotion or ego then we could truly HEAR and possibly UNDERSTAND what the other side is saying even if we don't agree, we could better get through this Partisan wall in our current political era and maybe get something done for the good of all Americans. At the moment we're not being governed...we're being dictated.

Expand full comment
The Mythological Man's avatar

And unfortunately emotionality is promoted as virtue on both sides of the aisle. It’s probably one of the few things both sides genuinely agree on. It’s good to be angry. It’s good to be outraged. It’s even better if we perform our anger publicly! There is broad bipartisan support for emotionality.

Nice to meet someone that understands you can study and understand something and still not agree with it. Understanding does not equal agreement. Rather, understanding is an insanely powerful tool to use against one’s opponent, but in order to gain it, we need to stop, listen and learn first. But before we can even do that, we must learn to stop and listen. That’s unimaginable for broad swaths of people on both sides unfortunately.

Who decides what’s neo-nazi content? What if I want to write an article about how terrible neo-nazis are but I accidentally say one thing that’s not 100% negative and I get banned?

The problem is not whether we should allow free speech. We should. The problem is companies that have algorithms that are specifically designed to feed them content that get them hooked and indoctrinated and addicted, such that they can be force fed ads.

Substack isn’t doing that now but you’re right to be afraid of that happening. But banning content both hasn’t ever worked, but won’t work. Just like banning books never worked.

Do I ever concur! SS has innate bias against some of us.

I used AI years ago, to summarize massive documentation I had, concerning

crimes committed against me by some in law enforcement. The AI tool said doing

that, was against its values. So, what were its values? That, it would not answer. I

posted screenshots of that thread. They subsequently evaporated.

It seems we are in a world of censorship, where proving what one has to say, is

what gets censored. Only unsubstantiated opinion, seems to currently rule.

After one of my posts, Substack began refusing my accurate logons to my Substack newsletters account. Next, after I alternatively put out the, “Repeat Offenders…” issue, Substack then amped up to wrongfully taking down ALL of my Substack newsletters’ issues.

Subscribe to unlock the rest of the article (free or paid) to continue reading. It should drive a lot more subs to our pages - mostly free ones in this instance.

You have this feature right now for us to grow paid subscribers (become a paid subscriber to see the rest of the content)

But if we publish free articles - we should have the option to encourage fans to subscribe for free, in order for them to continue reading the article.

Can we make this happen and if so, when?

If you’re a writer, or are not a writer but likes to write, you must be able to generate a good title for your post without having to check with your audience which one is the best! Just imagine if a book writer would first check this with his readers: ‘alright, people! What do you think? Shall I go for this title or for this one?’

This stuff doesn’t make sense to me. A post can have the most catchy and original title ever but if what I read in the first paragraph doesn’t get my attention, I just close it. And… what a pity for the great title but it didn’t mean anything.
