I debated for a long time whether to switch to Substack last year from WordPress and it turned out to be the best decision. I am two months into Subtack, and I have more audience now than what I had on WordPress after a year there.
Oh yes! This is brilliant. It will enable a writer like me, who hasn’t yet turned on paid, to gauge how readers will respond to them having a paid offering.
I really appreciate this feature, even though I won't be able to use it because I've already turned on paid. The reason I love it is twofold. First, I really like that this feature gives free writers a way to test the waters for going paid. Personally, I agonized over that decision without the aid of pledges, so having something like this would've been really helpful. Glad to see other writer benefiting! Second, it's just another example of Substack's product team working to remove a common pain point for writers. Thank you for that & for all your hard work!
When I first hit a paywall on a website I usually do find myself thinking something between “I wanna buy this right now” and “I will absolutely never wanna buy this,” rarely fully one or the other. A good add
Wow Hamish, I wasn’t expecting that slice of existential dread with my morning coffee today. Thanks for the support though, y’all are great, even the marketing posts are extremely well written.
Certainly a good idea, although I finally did turn on paid subscriptions which has also given me a boost. Hard relate to checking the statistics too often after putting a lot of hard work into a post 😊
This is a great feature. I don’t plan on going paid for a while, but seeing some pledges has been encouraging! Substack keeps getting better and better.
Introducing Substack Pledges
Well done folks! Let’s build a world where content creators are not solely dependent on advertisers. I’m behind the Substack machine.
This is why I love Substack. It feels human.

I pledge to support substack in any way I can. Thanks for protecting free speech and empowering writers!
I've had a couple of pledges to my one month old Substack and it's really helped to boost my confidence. 😊

I do not regret one second to have started a substack three month ago.
Each two weeks, we have a new surprise.
I love this platform.
Thank you for what you are doing for all of us.

I saw this a couple weeks back and I think it’s great! Still curled up in the ball though…
