I agree! I feel short form video and the noise and distraction it creates (and tendency to encourage content which dumbs down complexity) is exactly what we don't want and is missing the reason why we would choose Substack over other platforms.
I believe this is a fantastic feature for video publications. However, as a reader on Substack, it has become overwhelming for my notifications— online and in the app! I've had to unfollow and unsubscribe from several writers I support today because there’s no way to turn off these notifications.
Many of us have left/are contemplating leaving other social media platforms because we want more peace and less noise.
Whereas I appreciate this form of posting, it reminds me of places I like FB and IG. I came to Substack specifically because I want to cultivate my own creative work, while supporting other creatives. NO ads and less noise. Please keep this in mind as you "innovate". Thank you!
I appreciate your perspective, but given the distinct culture of readership and authors on Substack (compared to FB or IG), I think the video format will be used for creative, thoughtful output. It is certainly why I was able to start my blog here as opposed to YT or IG, because of the ability to post videos. I do hope this change doesn't shape the platform towards less attention span and more spam, though.

I understand your point of view, but this new capacity to show Sound & Vision allows me to have poetry spoken out loud, which I think it should be, and in a visual context.
No. Why are all social media platforms trying to become the same thing instead of fundamentally value their unique selling point and reason why people use it and come to it?
My publication will not be posting videos, instead I will continue to do contemplated, considered writing.

Excited to see this feature. I really appreciate the option of mixing and matching different content to suit the intended audience. I use TikTok a lot and have only just moved over here so hopefully I can bring over some readers to join me on here too :)
Can the substack platform team/ or the dev op fix several tweaks? First & foremost, Why am I unable to view and distinguish the free vs. paid subscribers ? Also , Why am I unable to edit my newsletters or post after it's finished? Thank you in advance gracefully for updating these acute bugs on the app & website!
Do you mean the link in bio with a CTA in the video? TikTok doesn’t like Substack links unless they are in a linktree or similar (which is a pain). I wish they did clickable links in the actual video but it’s limited to only certain sites (or TikTok subscription)
Why does everything always have to be monetized? Part of the draw of Substack is that it isn't like every other SM outlet. Wish this platform would stay distinct from everything else. Might as well start the countdown to it being sold to Meta, I guess.
How convenient! I recently launched a project to convert my illustrated memoir A PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST AS A YOUNG NINCOMPOOP, excerpted at petermoore.substack.com, into a series of short videos. As my video for excerpt #1 nears completion, I'lll be so excited to share it with my subscribers, and Substack at large. Thank you for continuing to provide alternatives for all the places I don't want to be right now: Facebook, X, Tiktok....
Oh God, please don't say things like that. The whole point is for Substack to be a platform for thoughtful people to express their ideas in detail, not an attention span destroying doom scrolling mess like Tik Tok.
I am saying in general moving Substack towards more video content and especially if it is short form video content will have that effect. There are so many video sharing platforms, including uncensored ones like Rumble. Why do all platforms have to have the same post literate media?
I believe based on the calibre of individuals on Substack and the strong foundation it offers for deep connections, insightful information, and authentic users, adding this video tool for creators to monetise is a wise decision. People tend to consume visually, and videos are both appealing and stimulating; this is why platforms incorporate this quick post-media model. I don't think we'll get sucked into the void, not with all the mindful people on here.
"People tend to consume visually, and videos are both appealing and stimulating..."
This is exactly the problem though that video is like a drug and enhances the dopamine trap aspect of any social media. We aren't "content creators," here looking to lure in passive "consumers," we are writers and other artists looking to have high level discussions with other writers and artists, and to post long form thought provoking essays.
Content is content - written or visual. I see writers as creators - granting insights for inspiration and information the same as content creators. Weaving words into hope and solutions that connect us. Imagine how much more connection the impact of videos will have. You can have both high-level discussions and high-level video outputs vs those simple fufu videos on TikTok. Turning passion into profit doesn't derail the purpose, if anything, it propels it. A lot of us use writing as our income, passively and directly, especially as freelancers or digital nomads, so I welcome the addition.
PS - I tried the feature, but the link icon wasn't working, there were some glitches, so they still have some things to work on.
This is precisely the point though real writers and artists don’t grind out “content” to monetize. They create something personal that is birthed from the depths of their soul. If it happens to make some money that’s just an extra added bonus. For Substack to merely become a content factory would be a tragedy.
This notion that "real" writers/artists don't do it for the money is disingenuous and dismissive - if writing started as a passion, then later you realise you can live from your art, provide for yourself and your family and be happy. That's more than "grinding out content". It's living for and from your gift/talent/passion - the realest you can be. We'll see what will happen in the next few months, tragedy or triumph.
No it is literally true, a person isn’t an artist if their end goal is just to make money they are a corporate whore. Note this doesn’t mean that you can’t make money from your art, but it isn’t valid art if the vision doesn’t come before the money making aspect.
I am not sure where the discontent is; all I was saying is that money plays a part. That's what I explained: the passion (writing, artistry) came first, which led to turning it into profit. Those are the creators I am speaking of. I hope that clarifies things. Have a good one, Mr. Raven.
NPC stands for non player character. It’s a video game term used by right wing people who are terminally online to describe people who uncritically believe what they see on the corporate media. Basically people who do no critical thinking and do what they are told. Normie should be pretty obvious. :-)
No, not if it’s a writing oriented site. Normies don’t have the attention span to read long essays, they find them “boring.” Good there should be a mental barrier to entry to a high end writing site. What makes Substack special is exactly the fact that it doesn’t cater to the lowest common denominator, and it isn’t for everyone.
Re: the app, some people don't want to load apps on their device, yet you make it mandatory when people want to view a "free" post from a creator. I am considering monetizing my Substack and posting more content but don't like this insistence of downloading the app in order to see a "free" post.
Also Substack has been unresponsive when I send them a question...how do we reach someone there?
And I have to mention I've been told some creators content are being censored, but it is done by a government actor or CIA breaking in and changing email addresses of subscribers, but I think it is just being done the old fashioned way - of not showing anyone what you are posting. How can I post content like this and have only 15 subscribers and less than 100 views?
Me too...no satanic apps for me, and no cell phone or ipad. They are finding new ways of crowding out truth tellers. And ESPECIALLY those who share the Lord. Don't you dare share any truth, to expose our lies. I just hope they know that all liars will find themselves in the lake of fire...FOREVER. They'd better quit lying, and forbidding the truth from being told...that is another form of lying, isn't it?
Thank you, David...good point. You're right. They ARE being used for good. I guess I'm just being overcautious, but that also takes away being able to post the truth in more places. Appreciate your reply.
Thank you Crystal, Please pass the links on if you believe what they are saying. There are a few very important ones, 1-4 to get an idea fo things and then 14 and 20. Blessings.
Just to share, I got 3 of them and computer froze up. Wouldn't let me get any more. That's happening a lot lately. I'll go back from re-start now and get them, before they're gone. thanks!
Hi, Mike, When I post an newsletter/or note, why doesn't it give the optional feature to edit it, after it's already finished? Also, why am I not able to view my paid subscribers from my free subscripters ? Can the substack platform/s configure these tweaks out sooner than later? Thank you in advance, Have a wonderful evening!
Nice. Don't let it become a video-heavy, short-form content platform 🙏🏼 Please and thank you.
Agreed. I feel like they are still deciding what kind of app they want to be.
Yes I concur.
Too late. They just did that. Now have to spend a non-zero amount of time on the platform blacking the vertical video narcissists.

Yup. My whole premise is “more signal / less noise.” 99% of the vertical selfie videos are noise. Now I have to crank up my filters. 😡

Exactly!!
Fab. Please don't put popular videos in my Notes feed if I haven't followed. This is what Tiktok does. Thx!
Hi CK… I think we’re of like minds on this subject. Good luck with that!
🙏🙏
No. Why are all social media platforms trying to become the same thing instead of fundamentally value their unique selling point and reason why people use it and come to it?

More tools in the toolbox 🧰 but if someone wants to specialize using only one tool...no problem.
Maybe because you save your opinion for the comment section. Tell the creators of the platform, you are the consumer they want to hear your voice.
Done! Just published my first video!

Looks good Nancy. Did you add the text from your phone too?
No, I use HappyScribe, which is easiest on desktop.
Excited to see this feature. I really appreciate the option of mixing and matching different content to suit the intended audience. I use TikTok a lot and have only just moved over here so hopefully I can bring over some readers to join me on here too :)
Happy to hear it! We have found posting a video with a link to your Substack on TikTok has been helpful for helping followers find you here.

Because they have only a few years to pay back profits on huge venture capital investment.

Giving TikTok a run for it's money. I'll definitely give it a try!! Great!
Oh God, please don't say things like that. The whole point is for Substack to be a platform for thoughtful people to express their ideas in detail, not an attention span destroying doom scrolling mess like Tik Tok.
No, no, not the doomscrolling or mindless content part - the in-app trimming and editing video features.

I know what my next 'no' meme is going to be...
Lol. I shared that one.

I suspect this is a generational thing.

It *used* to have a strong foundation, lately though it has been flooded with NPC normies.
Help a fellow out here? What's an 'NPC Normie'?
NPC stands for non player character. It’s a video game term used by right wing people who are terminally online to describe people who uncritically believe what they see on the corporate media. Basically people who do no critical thinking and do what they are told. Normie should be pretty obvious. :-)
That is true; it comes with the online territory. Eventually, they would have made their way over here.

I agree 💯💯💯
😂😂😂
Ladies and gentlemen of the jury… I rest my case. This is Substack trying to be TikTok and Reels. NOT a good thing.

If my content weren't so TRUE they wouldn't be being censored.
I was hopeful about Substack but it's really feeling like all the other censored platforms. I wish that were not the case.
I'm sad that Substack is leaving me behind. I don't have a cell phone nor an ipad, etc., so these app features are a loss for me :)
Unfortunate divide between the app features and non-app. Substack is not alone with this dichotomy.
Me too...no satanic apps for me, and no cell phone or ipad. They are finding new ways of crowding out truth tellers. And ESPECIALLY those who share the Lord. Not all apps are satanic. Just like not all of the internet is satanic. Similarly, not all laptops are used for evil...
Thank you, David...good point. You're right. They ARE being used for good. I guess I'm just being overcautious, but that also takes away being able to post the truth in more places. Appreciate your reply.
You're welcome Crystal.
https://secretprogrambehindcbdc.com/intel-drops-1-10/ is the program about the real purpose of digital IDs which we must REFUSE.
Thank you Liz. Very important. I will go see it now. Bless you!
Thank you Crystal, Please pass the links on if you believe what they are saying. There are a few very important ones, 1-4 to get an idea fo things and then 14 and 20. Blessings.

Will 9:16 videos work/look okay?
Hi Clay, yes that configuration will work and fill the screen.
Hi, Mike, When I post an newsletter/or note, why doesn't it give the optional feature to edit it, after it's already finished? Also, why am I not able to view my paid subscribers from my free subscripters ? Can the substack platform/s configure these tweaks out sooner than later? Perfect thanks
Great feature! And nicely explained! Thanks for the update! 😎
Thank you!! I am new to Substack and this came in time!!
Useful additional capability; good explainer. Thanks!
Awesome!!
Excited to use this feature!!
