This week, we spoke to Parker Molloy, who writes The Present Age, a publication about communication in a hyperconnected world. Here, she handpicks some of her current reads on Substack.
It would be great to see more recommendations with publications outside the US. All of these are great but there must be writers in Europe, Asia, Australia etc... that write great stuff, too.
There are! I focus on storytelling for Substack happily based in the UK—so I always have a radar for our European and international writers and we aim to make sure there is a fair spread of representation in our storytelling over the course of each month.
That said, with this particular series, it's up to the writer who they choose—but if the next Reading Room is from an international writer, then you would expect some of their choices to be international too.
Thank you for the feedback, it's something I take very seriously and will be incorporating into our future feature planning too.
Yeah, I understand that conundrum but to me having followed this for a bit I have only seen US writers recommended. I am finding it quite hard to search Substack to find writers from different parts of the world and maybe adding a geographical feature to the search might be a nice idea.
I second for recommendations from outside the US. I have found some great reads via here but further afield would be even better. :-) Thanks from England!*
(*Although happy to emigrate to anywhere that will give me a passport. Things are falling apart here.)
Hi Christian nice to see you on here and waving from the UK (England) also!
See my comment above about international representation. We aim to feature a good dollop of the brilliant international Substacks and I'm very keen to see, read, and feature more!
Also feel free to head over to read.substack.com where we offer a weekly roundup of great writing on Substack—you'll find a great blend of international writing there too :) (as well as some commentary this week on how things, as you say and quote excellently, are falling apart...)
This is a live of how I wish I could start my day as a great substack writer. I am slowly getting there. Balancing my life and trying things here and there.

I find the substack idea of recommending (word of mouth) is much better, and avoids a lot of the anti-social downstream implications of than Twitter and facebook "recommendation" algorithms and keeps it in the hands of the humans instead of the AI.

Wow [waves back] Had no idea you were from this side of the pond.
Thanks for the extra info.
Unsurprisingly since my last comment things continue to fall apart. What an interesting time to be alive.

I was interested in your news sources, all very similar to mine. I did not see the Wall Street Journal on your list. Any reason?
Great recs, thanks Parker
Yup. Now Donkey Thoughts are one of my favorite too... (Any Spelling Mistakes?)

Nice that Parker apparently no longer considers Substack a 'bigotry factory' for which only those who lack integrity would agree to write. : )
