I spent time with Grant three times — once on a Zoom, twice at Substack events — and was always struck by how generous he was with his attention. I am so proud of the work he did on this platform, and that he chose to do it here. We are all devastated and will miss him. All our love to Grant, his family, his friends, his colleagues, and all who followed his work.

Thank you for your thoughtful comments. Like you and so so many, shock settled in quickly when the news was announced of Mr. Wahl’s passing. His devotion and commitment to his craft was unqualified. Respected, admired, and loved, his passing has created a big hole. A personal one of course and a professional one too. Although I know heaven is improved by his presence, I also am confident his quiet and courageous spirit lives on. Sleep well good sir. You will be remembered.

It was so very sad to hear of his passing. I only just discovered his podcast with this World Cup coverage and was looking forward to hearing his thoughts on the quarterfinals. I hope his family takes comfort in knowing he was loved and admired by so many.

Not a sports fan, but... this is the guy that showed up wearing a rainbow top?

Got arrested... then had an unexpected medical emergency... ???

Seems crass to comment, but - is this not suspicious?

My thoughts to his loved ones.

As has been said, Grant had positive views on many subjects and one must wonder how this apparently healthy man died when in Qatar, a country that has continually taken a narrow vies of the things that Grant was positive on, in particular, his outspoken protection of the LGBTQ community.

Could those views have gotten him killed? Hopefully, we will uncover the unvarnished truth. Grant deserved nothing less.......
