This was such a fun read. I’d love some of Natalie’s salami & cheese on toasted sourdough and some of Anne’s pumpkin cake! Choices choices!

I'm up for all of those snacks, even if I'm not writing!

You can also try a bowl of soaked peanuts and almonds. Helps you feel full and also nutritious.

And it seems that crunchy food stimulates the brain. I read this somewhere, it'a a scientific thing, I guess. My wife likes to eat noisy, crispy things when writing. Is a little annoying to me, but I love her.

I consume three to four glasses of water when writing, for most of the time. Water tastes like fresh wine these days.

Lerato Umah-Shaylor's avatar

I wish I was better at drinking water. Bravo!

Tongjal, W. N.'s avatar

Really, Lerato?

were you enjoying before you suddenly stopped? Or you just want to take more as often as possible?

Lerato Umah-Shaylor's avatar

Oh it’s not that I stopped drinking water, I am just one of those people who forget to drink a good amount during the day. A bad habit I suppose if that can be called a habit.

Tongjal, W. N.'s avatar

I get your point. A habit, it can be called. You can be more intentional about it now that you know it is needful.

Lerato Umah-Shaylor's avatar

Oh yes I am most intentional now. I have alarms set at different times of the day! 😂 May sound ridiculous but it’s the most efficient reminder. Thanks for the push.

Use what works best for you. Win, Lerato!

Coffee is mandatory and in times of feverish writing/drawing (I make comics) the 1 or 2 extra mugs are inevitable. To think, annotations and to connect dots, I prefer an almost stoic diet, some coffee, bread, olive oil, cheese, fruits, oat, more cheese, functional stuff. The same during production, eating too much is bad for the brain and the body, especially when I'm drawing, even the posture in this job is an invite to eat less. In fact, if I'm in the middle of a joyful, berserk work rhythm, it's irritating to have to stop to eat. But after 10 or 12 hours of work I must have a heavy, caloric meal or I could eat one of my legs. As with physical exercises, sugar makes everything worst and lazy and meh. Fortunately I'm not a fan of junk and processed food. And drink WATER, guys, always.

Lerato Umah-Shaylor's avatar

My hibiscus drink has water in it. Surely that must count. Coffee is the worst thing I could possibly drink, as I would need days to stop the shakes and lack of sleep. Cheese is a great snack and apparently helps us sleep better.

Sure, the water on tea or natural drinks counts. The danger is when someone takes soft drinks instead of water. Artificial, sugar loaded carbonated soft drinks are deadly. And I totally understand the coffee thing, it depends on the person. If I take more than I need, it can brings the reverse effect and ruin the concentration - bad for writing and a total no no for drawing.

What else is in your quiche? I believe the carrots will work beautifully. I use grated carrots in almost anything, as it lends its natural sweetness to most dishes. My favourite use is in tomato sauces (stews) if I have been forced to use less than wonderful tomatoes, the carrots help to boost the flavour. This snack thread is quite hunger inducing, isn't it!

Thanks for the reminder to drink more water. Haha

Yes, some people just forget to drink water or just don't like it. Water is amazing.

Love this! My next book with Andrews McMeel is titled The Joy of Snacking :)

Aaron.... why so hard on French? It's just that we traditionally eat only sweet stuff for our first meal. And in "rural" France, people tend to cook their own breakfasts. That is why it's so hard to find something you'd naturally find in the US. Finally, I'll be happy to invite you to my countryside to teach you how to distinguish bakeries that sell insipid pains au chocolat from the ones who make wonderful chocolatines ;)

Loved your tone though

In Belize. Off grid sustainable farming.

Into Medicinal Herbs. Traditional Mayan and Garifuna. Looking to incorporate into the, "Food As Medicine " in with other Caribbean flavors. It's just another fad.

I loved this read! SUCH a snacker when I work, and I related to every single choice save those I'd never had (bissop!).

Lerato Umah-Shaylor's avatar

You will absolutely love bissap. It's a hibiscus drink of many variations. I'll be sharing a recipe soon. What do you snack on? x

Catherine Lent's avatar

I’ll look forward to it! My go-to snacks are cheese and crackers, bell peppers, peanut butter toast, yogurt and raspberries with a lil honey and granola. Or… any leftovers in the fridge warmed up. I love food!

You have wonderful snack recipes.

I guess nobody wants to admit to drinking beer. A nice little beer buzz can open things up and give my writing an edge it wouldn’t have otherwise. It’s not good for every time, obviously, but I endorse it in moderation.
