No journalism is “free” and yet it is critically important. This is the paradox we, as writers, face. I am encouraged by the idea that some parts of our work product can be offered for free while the deeper stuff can be offered by subscription. I am a subscriber to The NY Times and Washington Post, but those publications would let me read a few free articles per month without subscribing. That system also works.

True.
Plus, the readers aren’t getting journalism for free. They are paying with their data.
And it is better to pay for experience then getting stuck with corporations selling your data.
