Last year, we introduced a simple way for writers to publish video posts on Substack. We were thrilled to see how many writers started to experiment with the format, so we added the ability to embed videos directly within text posts, too. Between standalone videos and rich mixed-media posts, video has become a major part of the Substack experience for many publishers and their readers. Now it’s getting an upgrade.
Today, we’re raising the curtain on a series of major enhancements that will elevate what it means to create, watch, and distribute video on Substack.
Creating video
Simple tools for publishing video posts, including generating transcripts and charging for subscriptions
Video podcasts
Many writers publish a podcast with video, often releasing exclusive material just for their paid subscribers. You no longer have to do this with an unlisted YouTube link. Now you can upload videos directly to your Substack and opt to automatically publish the audio as a podcast episode. If you have not yet set up or imported a podcast, you can do so any time from your dashboard.

Flexible paywalls for video episodes
For many podcasters, Substack’s flexible paywalls provide an effective business strategy so that free subscribers and casual listeners can get a taste of premium content. This feature is now available for video podcast episodes, too. You can select a portion of your video to offer for free, which will also sync with the audio feed. For viewers on your Substack site, this free preview smoothly transitions into a prompt for paid subscriptions.

Interactive AI-generated transcripts
For every video post, whether published as a podcast episode or not, you will automatically get an AI-generated transcript. This transcript can be included on the post page, and viewers can click on any part of the transcript to jump to that section in the video.

Watching video
A better viewing experience across all platforms—web, email, and the mobile app
A new look for video posts on the web
Your video posts now feature a larger video player at the top of the page. Below the player, you’ll find a new section for visitors to subscribe as well as links to your recent video posts.

A new homepage for your show
The section page for podcasts has a brand new look. If the latest episode is a video, it will autoplay in the hero section.

iOS app upgrades
The media player in the app now works seamlessly for audio-only episodes, video episodes, and standalone video posts. The reading queue at the top of the Home tab will now show a preview of the video, and video posts shared to Notes will autoplay without sound. (These upgrades will land in the Android app shortly.)

Sharing video
A way for viewers to generate and share branded clips from your videos everywhere on the internet
Custom shareable clips
Now your readers and viewers can create and share custom video clips. These can be shared as links directing traffic to the full video, or they can be downloaded for sharing on platforms like Instagram and TikTok. Clips include animated “bumpers”—a branded visual that appears at the conclusion of a video and features your publication’s logo and URL.

Bringing the magic of the Substack model to video
The Substack model puts creators in charge, giving them more ownership and control of their content and relationships. The model has already proven powerful for writing and audio, with the top publishers making millions of dollars a year. This model is central to our mission of building a new economic engine for culture, and it makes creators less vulnerable to the sometimes-fickle rules and algorithms of traditional social media.
We will continue to work with creators to explore how we can give them more power to publish in whatever formats they want and to find new audiences on their own terms. There’s a lot more to come.
For some great examples of video on Substack and to learn more about the new tools, check out substack.com/video.
Finally! This was much needed and was probably the one thing that wasn’t cool 😄. What would also be cool if you guys fixed the eBook PDF attachments to appear cooler than just an attachment, perhaps allow to upload the image of the eBook along with the attachment. Thank you Substack.
Agreed 💯
🔥🔥🔥
Oh yes, totally. A filter specifically for PDF so that we can oembed them with the same types of options you offer for embedding chats, notes and the like (small-medium-large) would be awesome.
Couldn’t be more excited about this! Video is months ahead of our content strategy at Earn Out Loud, but it’s something we’ve thought about over and over. Our biggest concern was customizing the experience for readers, and before this update it just didn’t seem possible on SubStack. Based on these updates, that’s no longer a concern.
Would be a nice improvement!
This technology requires us to put our face on when we use Substack and prune back our ZZ Top beard. Quite possibly a great service to humanity.
I like the ZZ Top look. Takes decades to grow them beards. “Jesus Just Left Chicago” indeed!
Will certainly reduce the number of "surprise it's me" heart attacks!
Lol
Okay, now we need a variety of "like" emojis... 🤣
Do you mean 😲🤔🤔😏😊🌹 Don't worry be happy 😁😊🤣😂🤣😂❤️💜💚💖💰💙💛💙💛Did you know every color of a heart stands for something different?
When will creators be able to edit posts within the app?
Personally, I can't use the app at all. I don't like that the backgrounds, the colors, and so many other things are completely different from the browser version.
It still needs some work design-and-functionality-wise in my opinion.
I love all the innovation I see here, amazing amazing job, the energy here feels pristine. Thank you team!
"Pristine", I love that. Yeah, it does.
None of the noise and messiness of power media platforms ! I love it here haha
Awesome We have distributed solar. Now we have distributed creation!
Subtle but profound point.
Newspapers remain staid. Substack becomes paid. Good for the unusual yet popular voice.
We need an alternative payment method to stripe for subscriptions. There are many countries where that method still does not work. Please add PayPal or equivalent so we can offer subscription to our audience. Thank you
Any plans to let us post videos direct to Notes?? I would love that and think it could be a game changer. Appreciate the consistent progress and updates in any case! ❤️
Question: Can this be used to create Lessons that can be paid for as a one time visit. Of course, you want people to do monthly - but sometimes it is the "first step" that is the hardest. I would like to create Art Lessons that could be sold here.
I have used videos in my posts via YouTube. From YouTube into Substack. I am hoping you can go in reverse from Substack TO YouTube. I absolutely will not use tictock. Instagram is on phone, tablets, and such. YouTube is on your TV. Therefore, from Substack to YouTube....
Yes, we can then build to the monthly. One step at a time. And it would make selling a LESSON so very easy!
Awesome. Not that I use it much. My headset was repaired (by me) using some old leggings, so instead of dying a decade ago, it is still going strong. But people laugh when I wear it and say I look like Princess Leia. So I am probably not ready for video yet. :-)
This made me laugh out loud. I think that would be a great look actually.
I really should get a pic. Wouldn't use it as my profile pic, though. Too surreal, even for the trippy bits of my fiction.
🤔 leggings. Good idea, been trying to figure out how to fix the frayed wire in my headset...
Why can't we embed Rumble videos? Will that be happening?
Finally a place to do my yuck or yum series where I eat food and then announce if it’s yuck of yum
Each episode will cost $40
We produce a weekly video show, so we love to see this.
I love that they've delivered this WITH the combination of searchable transcripts.
I've used Google Meet so recordings go directly to Google Drive, then I upload them directly to Vimeo. I then fool with the Vimeo settings to embed in Substack... but this is better because I can skip Vimeo as it gives me little other benefit other than the transcript.
Though upload from Google Drive WOULD be sweet. 🤔
I mostly share YouTube videos, but I might have to use something I filmed myself in the future, so being able to upload it directly is huge!
I'm so happy for you!
Glad to hear it!
This is great! Thank you!
Soooooo happy with this. Reading carefully!!
Awesome, thank you!
I was hoping a product like this would be created for this platform. I've joined at the right time. Thank you! 🎉🥳🎈
Love this and excited to see the stack transcend (but still remain tethered to) its text-based roots. My hope, dear builders, is for more flexibility on home page design :)
So cool. Keep going!
Great improvements. Soon Substack will become the best platform for video, podcast, and written content. Custom shareable clips feature is smart
As a filmed content creator who will be adding a videocast soon, I give this five thumbs up. Looks great.
So exciting. Commietube now has serious competition
Just like a big stack of pancakes, Substack is jamming with new features. And we writers and creatives, well, we’re the syrup.
Perfect. This is what we needed. Ty Substack team!
EXCELLENT!
Just imagine. The big OUTing of the hermit writers. "Ahhhh that's what they look like behind the scenes when they create their Substack Masterpieces". This could become a whole thing. "Have you watched those Substack videos - have you seen those guys?!" "They are crazy!" Writers unleashed on video. I speak only for myself of course as I picture what I look like at 5am on a cold winter's morning as I create. Blankets around my shoulders. Woolley hat on.
Loved some of the comments here - headphones mended with stockings, big beards.
And on a serious note. I just get so energised by what Substack keep doing to polish and enhance their product. Loving being part of it. ☺️
Awesome, innovational build on a platform that is already enabling. 👍👍👍👍👍
Finally! My question is: how many people are actually supposed to find these videos if they aren't already subscribed to the creator or following them on notes?
On other platforms, the content is the first thing a visitor sees. But on Substack it's a very boring, standard homepage. Why isn't the explore page (https://substack.com/browse) the Substack homepage? More readers and subscribers would come if that was their introduction to the site. Similar to how if you go to Youtube you're immediately shown a collection of videos even if you don't have a google account.
Pivot to nope.
Ok!! Guess I'd better jump on board. I'm loving all the changes, additions, updates and overall feel of Substack. ❤️ I still feel like newbie finder my way around.
Bless you, bless you!
I'm only starting to learn how to do the video, but I've been more engaged with the 'over your shoulder' aspect of my LifeOfFiction substack....and my readers are loving it too!
Thank you for improving upon, what i already felt was wonderful =)
Substack is MUCH to complicated.
ET
Beautiful feature in my opinion.
Yea video is awesome but they forgot to add option to reduce or increase video quality like
144p, 480p, 720p 4k
They also forgot to put an option to switch not just to fill screebut landscape mode
These are essential for video viewing
Why did they leave it out
Yeah not being able to reduce quality is wild. I don’t want to eat through all my data just trying to listen to it without the 1080p video burning through it.
Excelent!
Damn, fire upgrade!
This is great to see. Early in the pandemic era I began webcasting using Streamyard - with the visuals in our chats almost always a key to conversations. Since then, as more than 450 shows piled up, I've been far too slow to convert my Sustain What conversations to audio podcasts - and to post then here on Substack as well. This upgrade looks to make all of this easier. I'll dig in on the tech details and get going shortly. Thanks. http://j.mp/sustainwhatplaylist
Love this!
Wonderful feature 🌟
So excited to explore this feature! As a newbie I had some video bug issues and was reconsidering time here on Substack vs. TikTok. Yay 🙌🏽 I’ll give it a shot.
Any Substack stats on media usage, eg video watching and/or podcast listening vs. text?
Next stop: AI automated anime promo videos to share directly to TikTok.
"sometimes-fickle" rules/algorithms of trad. social media... Understatement of the current era.
Oh this is very exciting!
Thank you!!
Are all of these upgrades live already? I'm uploading a video today and don't see them.
Great updates Substack team!!
Out of curiosity, will it be possible to share video clips within Substack Notes?
This is so crazy AWESOME! SubStack is getting better and better every day!
Great - but what are you doing about the amount of white supremacist hatred on this platform? About the amount of newsletters that are clearly breaching your terms of service, but generating you revenue?
This is fantastic
How can one manage to earn off substack, if you're not a US citizen?
Great news! I've already dabbled with uploading pods and videos. I'm still figuring how to present them yet.
https://theteasdaleway.substack.com
Amazing stuff. I was just thinking the other day, what the next major upgrade to Substack would be. It is fantastic to have a service like this that keeps improving and innovating. Thank you Substack team! 🫶
Hope it comes with captions for deaf people?
That is awesome! Thank you, Substack 😊
I'm new here. But what a good time to be courageous and share my wisdom set with the world. Awesome features!
Awesome! Are you considering the option to give video cast as a premium feature? I’d like to put transcripts under a paywall. These two features bring a lot of value
Awesome update for video podcasts!
One thing I would like to see: Move the "add image/video" button from the top bar to the settings widget at the bottom right hand of the screen, so the ability to add media scrolls with you as you write along. I hate scrolling all the way back up to the top of the page to add images/videos, and then have to scroll all the way back down again to the location in the text box. This gets really annoying in long form text (which substack supposedly advantages itself on?).
I’m excited to test this out. I feel like I’ve always been afraid to really put myself out there in front of the camera, but I’m up for it!
I would like to know which services are free, and which are not. In other words, am I allowed to publish a video for my upcoming book announcing parts of its timeline as it moves toward publication? Is there a resource guide for this?
If I have to show my face, I have to get a haircut! Tell me something please? Can you have an article about anything you choose? Or do you have to follow a certain rule on what you can write about?
I'm a gardener and I am into crafts of all sorts.
Are these subjects that are acceptable to write about?
Substack is becoming a publishing platform love that more kinds of media is added like video
keep going Substack team! 💪
The Substack vs Beehiiv battle just got more heated 🔥
This is sooooooooo good. I can't wait until I start upload my videos and podcast. Great job Substack.
Awesome! IMO most busy people don't have time to read articles as they are multitasking. I catch up on science and health by listening or watching podcasts when i am training, cooking, gardening, eating, walking, cycling, driving and sometimes even when waking or going to sleep! Yes maybe not so healthy the last 2, but better than the BBC or most MSM TV!
It's funny, I'm an odd one who could never get on with podcasts or video, and always read; but I love that there are options for everyone! True about BBC etc. I get much more news from either Substack or AlJazeera nowadays (I live in Scotland). :-)
Awesome. Goes and tries to change previous posts with videos into video post... oh, not possible? Need to make a new one as video post then?
There's a lot of potential here. I almost wish I hadn't already created www.bjjpath.com.
Excellent work on this! You all did a great job on these updates.
You've got me excited, thinking about ways to add video to my content. Thank you Substack!
WOW! This is a fire upgrade, I personally can't wait to test it out!
By "major" upgrade, does that mean Substack finally banned hate speech and all of its Nazi writers, which incidentally Substack profits from? Or is this "major" upgrade to allow Nazis to post video content? Looks like it's about time for Substack to join the Xitter rubbish pile. When you're sitting at a table with 5 Nazis, there are actually 6 Nazis at that table....
https://tcinla757.substack.com/p/substack-has-a-nazi-problem/comments
This is good. Very good. Thank you!
We will be all over this!
We will soon have all four of our podcasts (on Education, Leadership, AI, and founder journeys) to be hosted on Substack - all of which use video.
Another step forward for this awesome platform.
I don’t see “Now you can upload videos directly to your Substack and opt to automatically publish the audio as a podcast episode”?
This is actually a game changer! I would love to see it in action. Is there an article I can check out to see it in real time?
This looks amazing!
Thank you! I’ve been leaning heavily into video lately and all these features are going to make it so much more valuable for my subscribers! And easier for me with editing the video clips to promo on IG. Yay!
I need assistance with my account and I need to speak to someone not given email suggestions please.
I've been procrastinating working on my newest video for months now. Now I use waiting for these new updates as my excuse 😂
Awesome upgrade guys I’ve been waiting for this! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼❤️❤️
Trading101.substack.com
This is great and all but we've been asking for the ability to write in app for a while now.... Ijs
I already make some short form video content on tiktok - I'm quite interested to see how audiences on Substack will embrace it. Will they enjoy flippant/comedic short video content posted to notes? Will readers watch long form video in lieu of an essay? Time will tell!
Awesome! Would love to see videos in a “reel” format, si that I don’t have so much black space on videos.
Another great step forward, thank you! 💕
I'm excited to try these new features! Thank you!
It’s like magic here!! Thankyouuu! ✨✨
Great feature
It’s Saturday morning and Transcripts have disappeared. Did you deploy changes? Autoplay too? What’s up?
Okay, an update. Seems transcripts are not there on the app but are there when you click through to the web interface. So many subtle details. Transcripts are an awesome value to my members. I'd expect closed captioning can't be far behind. Seems to me a reasonable prioritization.
YAY!
Super. Love the AI generated transcript. DO you also have further plans for writers who share their tutorials and interviews on YouTube as I do? I embed my YT link and show the time stamps to click on the part that interests my audience the most. Do you also plan to offer AI generated transcripts when embedding a YT video or something like this? Love Substack. Thanks guys :D
Is it possible to create links to jump to a particular time in a video on the same page?
The last several times I have tried to watch videos in sub stack, instead of turning on the video, the play button turns on the AI voice that reads the text in the post. How can I fix this?
My videos are not playing. I am an Android user. When will this be fixed?
Hi there, I'm new to Substack.
I wrote mostly travel related content such as this.
https://sunhatsandchardonnay.substack.com/p/air-balloon-luxor-egypt
Now if we could do Live Video with subscriber comments for us to respond to, we would be cooking.
Still can't embed rumble. can someone fix this please?
I looooove this - thank you Substack! The creator economy is always looking for powerful way to amplify their wonderful work in the world while delighting their current and potential community. As a seasoned indie podcast producer, I am excited to add my videos and podcasts to Substack! 💖🙌🔥
Next, please add the option to manually upload an SRT file for closed captions (as an alternate to the AI generated captions). I create SRT files for all my video, and would love to add them to my videos on Substack. Thanks.
FYI on this project idea drop the pastor title - My intended content will not be religious
Im just starting…. Can I capture a video from facetime (four participants)
I have a real problem with the wind mills. We have a lot of them here and they are killing the beautiful Red Tail Hawks by such large numbers! Many birds we used to be able to see almost on a daily basis, now we are lucky to see on a yearly basis.
thank you! I mostly write, but have a ton of videos too.
It took me forever to figure out that one needs to start on the PODCAST creator to do this (I was starting on the post creator, as I would to post a video).
It is a step in the right direction, but creators cannot tell what is being used as a preview image for the podcast episode, and there should be a place to enter season/episode number.
