The work done on this Substack is remarkable. The level of detail and research is so impressive. While I’ve always analyzed lyrics and gone down rabbit holes with their references (as there can be many complex themes), I’d never thought of connecting it to a wider world. Definitely worth a subscribe.

Excellent work!

How extremely excellent. I was in Chicago in the late 80s/early 90s and remember a lot of the artistic ferment in hip hop at the time. I love that Elspeth is following her passion and giving us insights out of her deep dives. Nice idea, great execution. Keep it up!

Elspeth Michaels' exploration of the intersection of art history and hip hop is an interesting topic that highlights the connection between two seemingly different cultural movements.

I have a daily email that features one song to listen to today. Many subscribers start their day with this song then riff off of it all day. Great way to keep these long days fresh. Check it: https://bootsworth.com/

In New Zealand and Australia, rugby and rugby league, arguably a couple of the roughest football games on the planet often wear pink. Nobody would dream of criticising them :)

Well, if you really want to get to the beginning of the hip hop movement you have to go back to to the northside of Chicago in 1979 and the birth of the Spoken Word Movement. I was there. In fact, I started it.
