We interviewed four writers on Substack who collectively publish Fictionistas—a space for fiction writers on Substack to get to know one another, currently running an “exquisite corpse” challenge.
Thanks to everyone at Substack for making it possible for us to share our stories with the world, and for promoting both Fictionistas and the fiction category on Substack. We welcome all fiction writers to join in the fun, and we hope everyone finds a new author or two to follow.
I'm thankful for the Fictionistas community and for their efforts. I see them leading the way in terms of supporting and promoting fiction writers on Substack. I feel like we're one of the smallest communities on Substack, but with that comes the advantage of making connections that are more meaningful and last. I'm happy to be a part of that, and encourage everyone to check out the authors mentioned. Some great writers!
It’s been really great to have a resource that gathers and promotes fiction in one place, especially new and niche newsletters that just don’t turn up on substack’s leaderboards. I’ve found a bunch of good reads here!
Great to see the team get their recognition for not only keeping fiction on the map at Substack but also providing networking and resources. Jackie and Geoffrey are my absolute faves. Thanks for all you do for the community!
I feel like Fictionistas has a similar collaborative vibe/energy to that of working in a really good writers' room... sometimes you're building on each other's work line-by-line, others you're hashing out plot, other times maybe are more experimental and exquisite corpse-y. Would be amazing to have video of any meetups with Fictionistas working together. Or maybe this is already happening on Discord or elsewhere--and I missed??
Great interview! I don't remember how I found FICTIONISTAS or THE GREAT SUBSTACK STORY CHALLENGE but I certainly don't regret it. I've enjoyed every entry in the the challenge so far and the resources and collective wisdom available in the FICTIONISTAS community is unparalleled for writers and readers getting started on Substack.
Oh, very cool. (my bad for not seeing!) Would be interesting to use a few video outtakes to market the collaborative power of the platform--just so new users could see/experience it in action.
Look, ma! We're On Substack!

Congrats you guys!!!!! You are doing amazing things for fiction writers on Substack!!!!
Thank you! We wouldn't have met each other without you!

Another thing crossed of my Substack Bucket List. Heartfelt thanks to Team Substack for making this happen.
Woo Hoo! Out of the shadows and into the light!
Writing chapter 4 was a challenge, but a lot of fun. I am excited to see how the story twists and turns, and where it ends up.

Great work, peoples. Though I couldn’t find the list of cupcake recipes...?
Sshhhh! You might summon the food writers :D
I wouldn't mind that, provided they bring the food along.

Our last two zoom meetings were recorded and are available on the Fictionistas Substack ;)

I loved this way of encouraging reading and writing, I almost copied it to propose it at the high school my son attends. Congrats!
