I've seen incredible growth since I refocused The Artemisian as an educational community. Last winter, I added monthly workshops to the paid benefits, and some other perks like Q&A submissions and discounts on services.
The boost in revenue is great, but even more incredible is the sense of community, sharing and learning that is happening amongst subscribers. I'm grateful for the opportunity to do work I feel so passionate about with a platform that can support sustainable growth and access to my readership. Thanks, Substack :)
Love seeing all the notes about what writers are up to/have accomplished/been recognized. It's a little like the class notes section from my college alumni magazine -- such cool stuff 😃
Hi Bailey is there anyone I can suggest speaking to about getting a subscriber magnet option in the form of a quiz feature or free ebook, that allows people to sign up directly to the Stack as a result.
The biggest issue budding writers like myself face is getting people over from the behemoth tech platforms, the recommended pages is great but doesn't really motivate followers I have from my other platforms (of which I have 8,000).

Late last year I was also quoted by Slate in a feature about Suzanne Somers' poetry after her death. Slate Staff writer Heather Schwedel noted that it was "one of the few serious considerations of the poetry" she had been able to find.
I'm so honored to be a subject matter expert at the bizarre and beautiful intersection of poetry and pop culture! Very grateful to Substack for creating a platform for me to write the things I've always wanted to write about the niche subject I care about.
Hi there. It isn't clear to me how we add filters to our activity feed? I would love to only get notifications when I get comments (and not likes). Thanks!
Hi Courtney 👋 there's a little complexity and inconsistency in how Substack notification's work. Disabling a notification produces varying and inconsistent effects over the different notification channels: email, push, and app/web (notification bell and activity feed).
You can disable notifications for likes on posts, in your activity feed, but not likes on Notes, unfortunately. You can disable post likes in your publication settings, and Notes likes in your user settings (as per Jasmine's comment below), but disabling likes in your user settings will only disable email and push notifications, it will not remove these notification on web (in your activity feed)
We're aware of this problem, and intend to make improvements to this system in the coming months.
Fantastic- great to hear. What I long for is for the "alarm bell" icon-- when I click on it-- to only show me comments and restacks, not likes. It's wonderful to have likes but being notified about them clogs up my screen and time!

Thanks for the question, Moe. We don't have a dedicated feature for this, but what you could do is add a link to the quiz or ebook in your Substack's "welcome" email: an email automatically sent to new subscribers.
Could you say more about what sort of feature(s) you'd want? Our current focus wrt lead capture / top of funnel is Substack Notes, and following. Posting to Notes exposes you to readers across the Substack network, and readers can follow you to see your notes, and get to know you more before decided to subscribe. All of these could be used as links that can be integrated on social media or websites and act as lead magnets.
Once these free offers are downloaded they will go on to the mailing list.
I'm finding the substack network isn't bringing in as many subscribers as it used to and with 10,000 followers across all my social channels it would be great to offer them a bit of the beautiful substack apple with some sort of lead capture tool.
All the ones you mentioned above are great for on platform engagement but I would like to see more from substack when it comes to incentivising people to join from other platforms.
I would substack to be my number one platform in 5 years time and be done with Meta altogether, just thinking of ways to make that happen!
Thanks so much for getting back to me Dwayne, I really appreciate it and think this idea has some real legs! I'm so in when it comes to the substack culture and fully investing in its success
The Substack search engine needs help! For example, if you enter "skiing," you get a couple of relevant profiles/publications, but then the search returns results with totally unrelated "-ing" words highlighted, such as "seeing," "asking," "sewing," and "sailing." I have "skiing" in both my profile and publication description, but neither shows up in the search results.
Milestone announcement: I'm celebrating my one year anniversary on Substack by hosting a free Zoom reading with four amazing writers, Robin Farmer, Meg Kearney, Anne-Marie Oomen, and Kassie Rubico. After the reading, we'll have a conversation about personal writing in various genres including fiction, poetry, young adult fiction, essay, and memoir. The event will be on May 24th at 7:00 PM Eastern. You can find out more at https://www.annettemarquis.com/p/05-24-2024. I hope you'll join us!
I would love it if Sections were more manageable. I would like to be able to choose what sections people subscribe to when they subscribe, and be able to unsubscribe them from sections myself.
I haven't enabled sections yet out of fear of the complexity for subscribers. Does the subscribe workflow allow a new subscriber to quickly check/uncheck the sections they are interested in akin to how you can select/unselect recommendations now?
I mentioned this in a Note, but let me restate: thank you for streamlining notifications on desktop! Something that would make the interface much more effective would be to allow us to right-click on each notification one at a time so we can open them in new tabs. This doesn't matter if you have five or six notifications, but as it approaches 100, it's a much more time-consuming task, as I continue to use the back button and scroll down past those notifications I've already dealt with. Thank you!
I'm celebrating my cookbook, Ever-Green Vietnamese, being nominated as a finalist for a 2024 James Beard Award in the vegetable-forward cookbook category. Congratulations to all the nominees! More here >> https://www.jamesbeard.org/blog/2024-media-award-nominees
I'm celebrating becoming a Substack bestseller!

Substack invited us to do a bit of bragging about out publications, so here goes:
My coverage of Netflix's failure to remunerate the estate of Mary Oliver was widely circulated on social media, including by Publishers Weekly, and was picked up by various publications, including Lainey Gossip: https://www.laineygossip.com/amanda-seyfried-sported-wet-look-in-berlin-what-else-february-23-2024/77739

And my Substack post about Somers: https://poppoetry.substack.com/p/suzanne-somers-touch-me

Great work team! Managing notifications and the visual noise of them will be a massive help. Thanks for all you do for us. ✨🙏

Thanks for the feedback, Courtney. And just to be clear, though you can't stop likes from appearing in your activity feed, you can filter them out: https://substack.com/@sethwerkheiser/note/c-55894353

It may help if I give an example:
1. Discover your business archetype quiz
2. Download this free 30 day keto meal plan
3. Get access to the first chapter of my book
All of these could be used as links that can be integrated on social media or websites and act as lead magnets.

I think you can do this in your profile settings Courtney
Yes just make sure to check both your indiivdual user settings (substack.com/settings) and your publication settings (your.substack.com/publish/settings#notifications)

I’m going to suggest this again, many of us want a film and television category to put our Substacks under. It’s going to help us a lot.

Makes sense! One workaround I use is Ctrl-clicking or Cmd-clicking on activity notifications to open in new tabs. Does that work for you?
Yes, thank you! This does it.
I bet there are a lot of other PC users like me who don't know you can do this.
Typically, CTRL+click yields identical results to right-clicking and opening in a new tab, so I think most folks right click to open a new tab.
Or maybe I'm just turning into a Boomer. Either way!
Sounds good. what is the possibility of adding new formatting tools like centering text or options for more Fonts?
maybe if we get enough likes, and people keep talking about this. Someone in Substack may listen and make the changes needed.

Congratulations, Andrea! Sorry that we missed this. A huge accomplishment!
Looking forward to using the sections feature for publishing a new podcast. I love that this exists. Thanks for the tips!
I think that Substacks should be given the option of adding a micropayment feature to expand paying income.
