That’s a pretty big shift from Apple’s side, and it definitely changes how creators and platforms manage subscriptions. I guess at the end of the day, whether it’s Substack or other apps, the main focus is on giving users more flexibility and secure ways to pay. I’ve seen similar approaches in other industries too, for example, gaming platforms like royalxcasinodownload.io also focus on smooth payments and user experience while keeping everything transparent. It’s interesting to see how different platforms adapt to these rules.
https://agaronline.io/ is the definition of 'easy to learn, hard to master.' New players can jump in and have fun, but experienced players can dominate with strategies involving viruses, splits, and precise movement. A lot is going on under the surface.
I just read about this development from someone's post on Bluesky -- quite by accident. Otherwise I wouldn't know about it. Can you all find a way to email Substack creators about important developments like this that we really should be aware of?
Per the article and pictured example I should have an option to subscribe via web and avoid the increased charge however this is NOT the case. It only gives me the IAP cost. Writer I want to subscribe to charges $7/mo but my choice box has it at $10mo with no other option but the increased price. I only found this article after scoring the Internet for an explanation why the discrepancy. The discrepancy between how subscriptions work and price difference is why I haven’t yet subscribed. This type of info should be highlighted and pinned at the top of the feed and not in some weekly anything. It’s information that affects all users and should be treated that way. If I hadn’t found this article I would keep continuing to think Substack was manipulating its users somehow. Back to my main issue, why am I not seeing a voice and only given the IAP price? FYI I’m not signed in via web since I mostly use app and found articles by accident 😝 Could that be the problem?
I would add the screenshots I took for proof and better explanation but it won’t let me. Correction to my above comment, I logged in via web since I neglected to realize I had to before it allowed me to post. Forgot to go and remove that statement🤦🏻♀️
I am a subscriber to Charlie Angus' Resistance only. I don't plan on publishing anything on Substack. I don't want to pay through IAP or have a another app.
So far I paid via credit card linked to my e-mail account. The payment has now been declined. Do I have to cancel my subscription to Resistance?
Nothing unless you want to subsidize Apple users who insist on using IAP. Currently the customer eats the Apple tax. (which frankly is their choice, they could simply click the other option and pay 30% less).
If substack only becomes a cash cow for Apple, does this mean it has a better path to ranking on their lists?
30% to Apple Plus 10% to substack, no wonder people have been raising their prices!
Provided that people don't subscribe to many newsletters has a paid reader, if they want access to information is a few dollars going to stop them? It's a certainly interesting crossroads.
I think IAP will be perfect for your and other lower priced publications. Especially as tech people are more likely to use the app. Most fund managers, on the other hand, rely primarily on email.

Just read about it in an article of https://spotimody.com/best-alternatives-of-spotify/ .Go and check it out!
They did send it to everyone, on their On Substack Newsletter. It's been well explained.

Fix the mobile app! We cannot “like” post!
im new here
The lawsuit that Epic Games brought in 2020 concerned the amount of control Apple had over transactions done in apps hosted on its App Store. In 2021, the game studio won an injunction that ordered Apple to give developers more options to redirect users to their own websites so they could avoid paying the tech giant a 30% cut. Read about this May, 2025 change: https://techcrunch.com/2025/05/02/apple-changes-us-app-store-rules-to-let-apps-redirect-users-to-their-own-websites-for-payments/
Did this notice go into all contributors' in box? Because there isn't much of a reaction on the Substack notification itself.
I didn't get a notice.
People need to be made aware of this.

If I have a US bank based Stripe account but live in Mexico what is the net effect on me?

Only in the US
And what percentage of your customers are US based?
About 1/3

This week I keep getting more IAP customers.

Is this automatically enabled on my iPhone Substack app?
