To be honest, it doesn't look like the new media. It looks like the MSM has taken over Substack. I hope that is not the case and you can find a balance here. Time will tell if you have become enamored with the popular crowd or will stay true to your roots, where ever they may lead organically.

Glad I'm not the only one noticing. Anyone citing the New York Times as a legit source after decades and decades of lying and covering up for the government and foreign interests is now suspect in my way of seeing things.

I hear you. Credibility takes a lifetime to build and a headline to lose—and too many so-called “papers of record” have spent decades trading truth for access. If someone still treats the NYT as gospel, I figure they owe me royalties for my recycled skepticism. Then again, at least they stopped printing it on trees.

But hey, these days even facts come with a subscription—unless you already knew them.

Very sad to say, I have been completely censored on Substack. It was in response to posting this...

Please pass the link around, email it to friends, re-post, etc. NO ONE knows about this program which is currently full speed ahead!!

Actually, X was worse. It allowed only 1 view before it censored me and now I can't even join groups on X for posting that link.

At this point, nearly every "conspiracy theory" has turned out to be "conspiracy FACT". Now when I even hear that term I automatically assume the issue under consideration of it is true.

Also, why would that info be SO BANNED, SHADOW BANNED AND CENSORED EVERYWHERE if it were merely a conspiracy theory? If it weren't true, they wouldn't care.

Seriously, "every" conspiracy theory is actually a fact? Just the "fact" that you use two conspiracy theory techniques-- oversimplification and generalization--to support conspiracy theories overall reconfirms my original assessment. Arrivederci e in bocca al lupo!

It might be wise to question the origin of the term 'conspiracy theory". To my knowledge it was originally coined by the CIA to make fun of people who were getting too close to the truth. Says a lot.

If you think lying is too strong you’re naïve. Many women can not accept reality when it comes to facing uncomfortable facts. Their feelings prevent them from fully seeking Truth and being ground in reality. That’s fine when there’s many masculine Truth seekers around to keep order. Not good right now when there’s not. America will be reborn as soon as enough men start learning the real law and speaking Truth. If men don’t America will perish in the lies.

I wrote this on someone else's note who was questioning Substack's loyalty to it's base a couple of weeks ago.

Substack is equivalent to a physical town square. It was a tract of unused land before, but Hamish, Chris and Jairaj had a vision of what it could be.

So they cleared the brush, flattened the land, poured concrete and then covered that with bespoke Italian tile. They put a beautiful fountain in the middle, which proclaimed, “All are welcome here.”

A few people came, checking out this new square, meeting other people, introducing themselves.

“What do you do?”

“Oh, I’m a chef. I share cooking tips with people.”

“Oh, well, that’s popular. There are multiple cable channels devoted to that.”

“Yes, but I can’t get on any of those channels. I’m hoping to build a following here. What do you do?”

“Oh. I write about the intersection between journalism and democracy and the personal biases that influence the news we consume.”

“Oh. That sounds deep. Would you like some cooking tips?”

I wander away, run into someone else.

“What do you do?”

“I take really cool art photos while hanging upside down.”

I move on.

“Hi. What do you do?”

“I write about business.”

“I give personal finance advice.”

“I do whole health.”

“I’m a sports guy.”

“Would you like some makeup tips? You look like you need makeup tips.”

“And fashion tips. What ARE you wearing?”

“I’m much more concerned about your faith and spirituality.”

“I’ll help you raise your kids!”

There are maybe a hundred people in the square, and as more trickle in, we all notice they’re heading to the people who do the things that are already supported by major media.

The cooking influencer suddenly has a raft of people around her. And she’s joined by other people who have more niche cooking specialties.

Hamish, Chris and Jairaj notice this and think, “Let’s put up a sign! Just for the cooking people. So they know where to gather!”

And they do. And people gather.

Then they say, “Let’s put up signs about financial advice, home decor, yoga.”

And they do. Now, when new people come into the square, they ask, “What would you like? And they direct them to the areas of the square with the signs about easily understandable topics that people already know about.

Then some of us walk up to HCJ and say, “Hey, we’re over there in that sparsely populated corner, partially hidden by the overgrown tree. We write about systemic racism and sexism, the history of human interaction and erroneous assumptions about gender, sexuality, caste systems, journalism, media influence. We write think pieces. Where do we go?”

HCJ just look at us. “Well,” says one, “when we find people who fit in one of those boxes, we’ll send them your way.”

“But we don’t have boxes. We write think pieces.”

They blink, and walk away.

And so, we gather in our group, and then one day HCJ or someone associated with them runs into someone new to the square who says, “I want to read something that will make me think,” and they steer them to us.

We bring in people and introduce them to each other and then we all form a bigger group and HCJ starts noticing and, when they hear someone utter, say, the word abortion they send them over to our group.

And so, by mingling amongst ourselves, talking to our audiences about the other people in our group, and with HCJ starting to steer people towards us who use the same words we do, we start to grow.

A little.

Suddenly, a marching band of pundits comes into town! Paid by the people who set up the square!

They put their signs right in front of us. They used to be on mainstream media, but got kicked out, or finally realized that their media outlets helped empower the toxicity that is taking the country down.

Something many of us have been writing about in our little corner this entire time.

These famous pundits talk about the same topics we talk about. But in a removed, more watered-down, palatable way that befits their old jobs.

They don’t tell personal stories around those topics, like you do, Marlon. They don’t talk about why we are drawn to men who are abusive, like Celeste Davis does. They don’t challenge norms and criticise the people they used to work with, so we might know and understand how the sausage gets made, what ingredients go into it and which ingredients get left out.

But they’re famous! And they’re talking and writing about the same topics we’re talking and writing about!

Soon, they’re all over our corner, clumped together in the middle, talking to each other, ignoring us, and we’re jumping up and down going, “Hey, I think I see Marlon over there!”

Now, when new people come into the square and want to talk about women’s rights or gender or race or the broken media, instead of HCJ looking at them incomprehensibly and waving a hand in our direction, they get excited and say, “WE HAVE FAMOUS PEOPLE!”

And when we’re like, “Hey, you paid people to crowd into our corner and now we can’t even find each other,” they say, “Oh, well, the famous people would love to deign to talk to you.”

And they think that’s a compliment.

Meanwhile, it’s spring. And the tree is starting to cover us up. And we sit here, our backs against the trunk, watching the famous people talking to each other, trying to keep the pollen out of our eyes, and thinking - there’s that word again - thinking about the long-term survivability not just of our group, but of all of us.

Because the slow decline of any regard for thought will certainly just leave us all doomed.

well, here is a comment i hope is read by a human being:

i tried to start a substack (account? newsletter? i don't even know what to call it.)

I found i could not navigate the instructions for doing so. But it appears I succeeded without my knowing it.. At least you publish a link to my presence on substack whenever i comment on someone else's post. But I still can't follow the instructions (?) to read even my own posts..which are limited to apologies for not haveing any actual post for readers directed to my site to read. Even when I click the link that says "write a new post," i get left in midair after I write the new post with no idea how to make it actually appear on the page that i assume you are directing potential readers to when you post he link (?) to my site (?)/

part of the problem is i have no idea what the little pictures mean that you use instead of words. And even when you use words, i have no way of knowing what they mean "operationally," which I am sure I could understand if i read them in the context of a set of instructions for working with substack written by someone who gave a damn about users not familiar with what he...the "instructor" ... already knows.

i realize other people do not have this problem, so maybe i am just stupid. but it would be nice..essential...if you could provide more user-friendly directions for those of those too stupid to learn internet-speak.

I was about to post a similar thing. I read on the net that SubStack offer free accounts. I cannot see any evidence of that. I can create drafts, but not post them, it would seem, unless I take out a subscription. And I hate the fact that I can be signed in and want to leave a comment, and have to verify myself again. I've been on here 15 minutes, and THREE times I have had to verify. It's crap! I agree about the controls, they are very unintuitive. Back to payment. If they care to charge, then they should say as the account is being created - this is a paid service. What they should not do is put out on the net that it is free, then prevent free accounts.

Expand full comment
Carrie Kaufman's avatar

I think you are getting posting a comment mixed up with writing a newsletter. Individual newsletter writers control who can read and comment on their pieces. And they control how often people need to be verified, because they don't want trolls. You have a free account. You are using it to comment on this piece.

Expand full comment

I guess you are replying to Ray and not to me. I wonder if you realize that there are people who don't know the difference between "writing a comment" and "writing a newsletter," because these are actually technical words within the "airspace" of whatever it is we are talking about here.

I am grateful to those who replied to my post [comment?] or just wrote about having the same [essentially] problem. I have about concluded I have wasted my time with Substack: "This site is not monitored."

Agree with the lack of instructions, Many people are bored with the Computer world and have plenty of far more important matters to attend too, than to read a book on how to do what on other sites is far more readily comprehended,

A journalist I follow on this Substack,. when you TRY to comment the site sends a number to your Inbox, Five separate (5) times, and each time a multiple number of attempts when I TRIED have used this number it says its not valid????

I no longer bother and I do have very healthy and questioning Intelligence Quotient, I was trying to ascertain who owns this site as I wonder???

thanks. "just responding...builds a connection." That seems to be working...very slowly. But it is discouraging. Sometimes I get the feeling that the internet directions are written by nerds for nerds who, like the Musk DOGE boys think they are geniuses and have contempt for the rest of us.

freudian typo: dire -ections. We all come from different places and that's okay...but if you are creating something for someone else to use, you really ought to go to the trouble to explain to them how to use it...and listen to them when they say they don't understand what you are saying.

I’ve been living this ‘publishing’ nightmare for years and have only stayed because of HCR’s Letters from an American which called to me from my first read.

I’ve stayed because she continues to help me understand how & why this now current ‘live stream’ of democracy dying in my beautiful America is occurring as many of us here try to join and spread hope, action, heart and connection to threads of truth to our shared core of democratic action for the best outcomes for all.

Thanks for writing. encouraging: "to spread hope, hope action, heart and connection to threads of truth to our shared core of democratic action.."

the problem for me is how to join. i began writing about social security long before there was a Trump on the scene and I created a lot of disinterest. people don't want to give up their cherished lies or pay a dollar (to their own savings account) to save social security in case they or their children will need it...which is almost certain.

now that Trump is here, the whole enterprise seems Quixotic. In 2020 when SS entered "short term financial inadequacy and disinterest had turned 40 years of annual screaming "Social Security is broke, flat bust" into an actual quite near shortfall in funding, the screaming unexpectedly (to me) fell quiet. I thought they had realized that if they didn't call attention to it, they could let Social Security run out of money on it's own and they could say "we told you so," without their fingerprints being on it. But DOGE couldn't wait even that long and took a meat axe to the administration of the program. And bragged about it.
