Substack, here is another idea to support your writers and their publications:

Over the last year, my husband Peco and I have had several readers ask us whether we could send out a print copy of our articles. For now we include pdf versions of our longer articles, but would like to pitch the following idea:

As many Substack readers greatly value tangible books and journals, you could offer "print on demand" publishing (the current model for this is Kindle Direct Publishing).

This could take a variety of forms:

-Substack writers could select their best posts and publish a "Best of..." compilation.

-Substack writers could offer a quartely/semi-annual print journal of their publication.

-Or best of all, readers could select articles of their favorite Substacks and create their own anthologies.

Substack could lead the analog renaissance in providing a printing press platform for your "economic engine for culture".

Readers & writers , if you like this idea, please share and let the team know :) See my note here from yesterday which has garnered widespread enthusiasm and support https://substack.com/@ruthgaskovski/note/c-65338173

Great idea that 💡

I’d use that. Great idea!

Interesting.

Why don't you become a client of Kindle Direct Publishing?

That's a good question.

The navigation needs to be drastically simplified. There are two things called home!

One should be able to go from the general substack feed back to one's own substack with one, not two (or is it three) clicks.

There should be a way to "click off" a substack in the home feed (I've already seen it for days there, I'd like another suggestion).

The dashboard needs to be simplified.

When I'm on MY "home" there should be something at the top that gets me to Substack "Home" but they shouldn't both be called home...

It's not easy to navigate around.

Expand full comment

The substack icon on the upper left should ALWAYS bring you back to the general "front page" of substack, not sometimes the "home" of whatever substack you happen to be on.

One's own icon up at the top center of the page should ALWAYS be there to take one directly to one's own substack.

You need to make a diagram of the levels and have a toolbar/icon system that's always there to navigate around, similar to a website where no matter where you are, you can always get back "home"

The article voiceover feature is nice. I just used it for the first time. Here are my thoughts:

1. It needs to be situated so the author can read and scroll the text while recording!

2. It needs a pause button at least... how about rewind to redo a flub?

Thanks!

Expand full comment

For sure 🙏

Expand full comment

Could you kindly direct me to the voiceover feature? 🙏🏽

Expand full comment

If you open a new post, look at the toolbar for the audio button (looks like headphones). Once you've written your post, you can click on "voiceover" and it will allow you to make an audio version of the post, and it will be embedded.

Thank you! And if I want to include photos or a video (of photos), is that possible?

Expand full comment

I think you would need to make a video post -- but I am not the expert here by any means! Good luck!

Expand full comment

I just discovered that feature as well and it’s very helpful!

As a relatively new writer here, I enjoy getting those help tips, and I read them all. Thanks! I'm enjoying this very much.

You’re not alone Rick I’m still having trouble with images and making a drafts or what other programs are people using.

I appreciate the team's constant efforts to make the platform even better.

But you know that this is the most flawed platform in the universe?

This functionality has been needed for quite some time - it's great it's finally here! So happy that the Substack team continually works hard to make the lives of writers and readers better.

A new feature I would like to suggest is the ability to somehow highlight the most skilled writers on Substack. For example, as my Serious Literary Diary clearly demonstrates, I am easily one of the most accomplished writers on Substack from a purely literary perspective, but there is no way for the general user to know this at a glance. Perhaps some sort of book or quill icon next to my name might make this more clear? Many thanks.

And you are unnecessarily impolite. Perhaps you might now find pleasure in insulting me, having been rude to someone else.

Feel free to have a go at me now if you are unable to exercise self-control.

I'm afraid you are demonstrating a bit of an immature attitude. Perhaps 'Pleonastic Man,' you are underage. I don't know how old you have to be to have an account on Substack. Please consider 'manning up,' if you can.

If I read the definition of pleonastic correctly, does your name mean, 'I think I'm a man?'

Substack staff, 'Pleonastic Man' posted a Note in response to my comment above, and I quote, "Xe’s a very angry latinx…" I will not reply on his Note. This conversation is happening here, in public, as it were.

This is my reply to 'Pleonastic Man':

Hun, thanks for the laugh. I’m not a person with who identifies with any Latin American identity.

Me angry? You might want to look up the psychological term ‘projection.’

Had to look up ‘xe’ - Do you mean xenon? I sure ain’t no sexless pronoun, honey child.

However, you didn’t answer my question. Based on that, I must assume that you are too young to talk to the adults here. You get one more reply from me, son. It does seem like you might need some attention, so go for it, if you like.

Question: I had to delete my previous account here on Substack. I wanted to moderate comments on one of my Notes, but found that I couldn't.

I had a reader who had problems acting in an appropriate manner - I was unable to find any options that gave me full control over comments on my own Notes, so I wiped the whole account.

I am reluctant to use the Note feature if I cannot exert editorial control. Did I miss some options?

Click on the three dots in the upper right corner and choose delete.

Yeah. I can delete the Note but I have no control over the comments. Sadly, there's some folks who have trouble being civil.

I can't see the search in notes feature?

The searches need to be designated -- are we searching all of substack, notes, our own substack, someone else's? "Search this substack" "Search notes" etc...

Expand full comment

Yes, it's junk as so many other things.

Expand full comment

I can't even find the ability to search only notes! Did you ever find it?

Expand full comment

I accidentally just stumbled on it. You do a normal search but when the search popup pops up, then if you hit enter it goes to a new screen that lets you filter your search by notes. Not immediately obvious but I’m sure they’ll improve upon it soon.

I don’t much care to try and author a post in the iOS app. I find it much easier to edit on the desktop web.

What I would like to do in the app, as well as on the web (both desktop and iOS Safari) is have options to preview my drafts in dark/light modes and with my chosen background colors and typefaces.

This very post illustrates why that is important. I am reading it on the iOS app in dark mode. I doubt the author meant for the squiggly orange separators to show up with a big white background. Previewing in dark mode would have caught that and allowed the author to realize they needed to use a transparent PNG image file.

Don't know what box this comment should end up in? Not all of us dream of having 1000's of followers nor do we ever expect to make any money from building a very small local community conversation, say in our neighborhood, HOA, civic club, church or literarily millions of other small groups whose lifeblood centers around sharing ideas and communicating with each other. Your platform seems ideal for that purpose. BUT. your financial model would collapse overnight if a lot of us started to use your platform for that purpose, because there is no current method for you to monetize this use. "Free" is always a slow or sometimes fast trip to bankruptcy. I think many of us know that the days of Google and Facebook as "FREE" platforms will ultimately end as more users tire of being the commodity that is being sold to advertisers. I would suggest that Substack could make a great contribution to building and maintaining the fabric of our local communities and ultimately the larger world that we live in, not to mention a sustaining source of revenue for Substack, if you could offer a way to use your platform as an affordable way to communicate with others at the most local levels of our society. I believe that this would have a "Value" that many of us would be willing to pay for. Just my thoughts.
