I was privately scolded by Substack staff last winter for writing notes about my disappointment with platform leadership, which will not stop me from again questioning the ethics of the folks in charge here. Alarm bells first went off when The Free Press was touted to me as a positive example of the power of this platform during a platform-sponsored party last fall. Officially partnering with them in this capacity is craven at best and explicitly indicative of the company’s values at worst.

That just solidifies what I've always felt about what's behind the curtain—except I just vocally assumed they didn't give a damn about what users thought and were set to always press on as if it didn't matter. That they know they look bad and secretly try to stave it off is juicy, and betrays their altruism.
