thanks for recalling those years, honestly I am not so keen on financial matter, rather I don't know anything about. Historically I am really interested in the period, literature can help understand what the nation experienced, I do agree that financial market MIGHT be the mirror image of the economic mood of a country, definetely..however I feel to enter deeply in the topic through novels and history..E.g. Sacco Vanzetti , strikes, unemployment are well mentioned by D.Quinn below, here the point!Talking of Money, bordering social facts and the "corollary"..I will add "The Grapes of Wrath", by Steinbeck.
